Quality photography is the most enduring part of your wedding day: memories that you will treasure for years to come. We ask top photographers about their favourite locations for beautiful pictures to suit various themes.

The thrill of heights combined with the emotion of a wedding combines to make a wedding to remember on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The adventurous couple

Keywords: Active, quirky, fun, unconventional
Top choice: Bridge climb
Real bride says: Martin and Nicola Lawrence got married on the Harbour Bridge.

“We were engaged on the bridge. When we arrived at the summit, Martin went down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was a total surprise and a wonderful moment that I will never forget. As he didn’t have a ring at the time to give me, our climb leader, Jackson, made me a ring from a cable tie, which I still have at home.

“We have both been married before, so we decided that we would like something a little different than a standard white wedding and as the Bridge Climb was a special experience for us, it seemed the obvious choice for us to get married there too. The whole day was amazing,” says Nicola.

More than three million people have climbed it, over 4000
couples have become engaged on it and approximately 20
weddings have been held on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Facts to consider: If you choose an adventurous ceremony location such as the Bridge Climb or a hot-air balloon, your guests will be strictly limited, as will your wardrobe options. It will have to be a small wedding without a classic wedding dress. Of course, you can make up for that with a fabulous reception!

Other options: Crystal Palace at Luna Park. The wedding package includes discounted ride passes to entertain your guests prior to the reception. Ferris wheel or dodgem car photos are sure to be quirky and memorable.

Taronga Zoo is another fun choice. Uninterrupted harbour views, award-winning caterers, and photo opportunities with monkeys. What more could you want at your wedding reception?

The nature lovers

Keywords: Outdoorsy, rustic, relaxed, sunset
Top choice: Banjo Paterson Cottage, Gladesville
What the experts say: Karl Welsch from Welsch Photography says there are lots of beautiful photography locations within walking distance of this venue. Guests can enjoy the garden with views across the water while the bridal party take their photos nearby.

“There is the private jetty, bushland and old buildings with sandstone walls, so you have some really lovely options.”

“We love photographing in beautiful park surroundings or in nature. Sometimes the surroundings we photograph in can help shape the mood of the couple and if it’s a peaceful and serene environment, this helps the couple enjoy one another’s company even more. It shows in the photographs. It is a bit of a myth that the best time to photograph is on an overcast day. When we are photographing amongst trees, we love nothing more than playing with the sun and the light that spills through the trees. On a wedding day, it is nice to have a variety of different locations for the photographs and we do love to include a natural environment as one of these options.”

Other options: The Royal Botanic Gardens, Balmoral Beach, Clifton Gardens and Centennial Park are all naturally beautiful locations within easy reach of central Sydney. Check if council or any other permission is needed.

Remember that these are popular public locations so you won’t have the place to yourself and you will probably draw a crowd. Not for shy couples! If you have time to spare, try the Royal National Park near Cronulla. There are so many beautiful and typically Australian places for photos.
