Honeymoon Ideas: Bangkok City

There’s more to Thailand than a beach holiday. Break away from the traditional honeymoon with a Bangkok city break.

A private escape, lying around on pristine beaches, all your whims catered to... paradise or boring? Thailand has long been a favourite honeymoon destination for Australians but relaxing in the popular beachside resorts is not for everyone. Bangkok offers an entirely different experience — busy, vibrant and full of contrasts. It is an increasingly popular destination and is now the most visited city in the world by international tourists, according to the MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index 2013. Active honeymooners will revel in its opulent temples, tasty food and excellent shopping ranging from street markets to massive designer malls.

For the combination of location and luxury, you can’t beat The Peninsula Bangkok, which featured in the 2013 Condé Nast Traveler’s Gold List of the world’s best places to stay. You can relax in the hotel’s three-tiered pool and then be in the bustle of the city centre within minutes via The Peninsula’s complimentary shuttle boat across the Chao Phraya River. The hotel’s ‘W’ design ensures views of the river for all of its 370 spacious rooms. On a recent visit, I had one of the best cocktails I’ve ever had at The Peninsula’s outdoor River Bar — I enjoyed one of the hotel’s signature drinks with fresh Thai flavours of lime and lemongrass.

Afterwards, I dined at Thiptara, the hotel’s Thai restaurant, which had refreshingly simple and traditional dishes for such a luxury hotel. Sitting here in the sultry night air around a banyan tree, it’s easy to forget you are in the middle of a large city until you look at the skyscrapers and sparkling lights across the river. The Peninsula’s spa packages are perfect for a honeymoon — daily massages will melt any wedding stress away, not to mention the use of the steam and spa rooms, hot and cold Jacuzzis and exclusive relaxation areas.

If you can be convinced to leave this oasis of relaxation, the hotel has an excellent range of activities including cultural tours, Thai cooking classes and even Muay Thai kickboxing.

Travel Tip: Shop!

Bangkok has fabulous shopping, from cheap street markets through to luxury designer boutiques. Try the buzzing Asiatique night markets, fashion-forward Siam Square or Terminal 21 shopping centre, where each floor is themed around a different world city.
