Designer and owner of fashion label Aurelio Costarella

Talk us through your design process.
My summer 13/14 collection is titled Retrospect. It was very much about looking back at where I started and how my career has evolved. There is defi nitely a nod to collections past — a reinterpretation of concepts. I’m driven by the design process; each thematic collection is an exploration that moves seamlessly from one season to the next. A focus on textile development, detailed cutting and quality craftsmanship is what I strive for.

What inspires you?
Life, art, music, architecture, interiors, nature and light are all recurring themes in my work.

What kind of bride do you design for?
A modern bride. One that isn’t tied to tradition and wants to express herself in a far more contemporary manner.

Who is your favourite celebrity bride?
Grace Kelly is my most iconic bride in Dior and Carolyn Bessette was the epitome of style in her $40,000 Narciso Rodriguez sheath. So simple, so chic.

Who are your style icons?
My contemporary icons are Dita Von Teese, Cara Delevigne and Victoria Beckham. My classic icons are Audrey Hepburn, Dovima, Tina Chow and Marissa Berenson, and my eccentric icons are Diana Vreeland and Iris Apfel.

What are some trends that you think will come up in 2014?
Minimalism is back with a vengeance. A return to very slick, modern shapes ... no fuss. Or take it back to the '50s with super-sleek glamour.

Do you have any advice for brides-to-be looking for their perfect ring or accessories in general?
Keep it simple and classic. Remember that opulence dates. Look back at the classic design periods – 1920s-1950s.
