Worn everyday, engagement rings get dirty and this dirt, while seriously affecting the look of your piece, can also do a lot of damage. With the potential to collect under the setting and even move your diamonds, it’s wise to keep your engagement ring clean.
Many brides swear by this easy-to-make recipe: simply add a squirt of dishwashing liquid and enough ammonia to cover the ring to one jug of warm to hot (not boiling) water. Soak the ring for approximately two minutes and finish by drying with a hair dryer to prevent water spots from developing on the diamond. A soft, baby’s toothbrush can also come in handy.
Take your pick of the readily available ultrasonic cleaners which, having once been exclusively used by jewellers, can now be bought for home use. These cleaners use high-frequency soundwaves to dislodge any foreign matter caught in the crevices of your ring. As these are general jewellery-cleaning machines, use with caution on a gentle setting to ensure the process doesn’t loosen any of the stones.
Of course, there’s nothing like a professional clean and jewellers recommend brides bring in their rings every three to six months to get them washed. The added bonus here is that they will also evaluate the ring, giving you an update on the value for insurance purposes while also making sure the setting and stones are still fitting properly.
