Weddings Galore In The Illawarra Region

The coastal Illawarra region is an area couples will want to choose as their wedding spot. Ben Nour explores the highlights

With its golden-sand beaches, coastal mountains and lush rainforests, the Illawarra is perhaps one of the most unique regions in Australia, if not the world. The picturesque towns and cities of the Illawarra not only offer engaged couples a variety of stunning scenic backdrops for wedding photos but also a wide range of venues to host their special day.

The appropriately named Sublime Point Cafe is set on a 20-acre parkland and features a 180° view of the ocean, which serves as a beautiful backdrop for weddings. For those wanting a wedding even closer to nature, the Mt Keira Scout Camp offers a variety of outdoor venues, including the Glen, a function facility with a stage, and the Bush Chapel, a natural amphitheatre, both of which are surrounded by bushland.

Another of the region's spectacular spots, Tumbling Waters Retreat & Restaurant has quickly become renowned
as one of the most unique venues on the South Coast. Perched on the edge of the Illawarra escarpment and surrounded by the Royal National Park, Tumbling Waters features private gardens and magnificent views of the ocean and surrounding bushland.

Great Pacific Drive
Beginning just south of Sydney’s Sutherland region, the Great Pacific Drive is one of Australia’s best road-trip experiences. The 140km drive south offers some of the best sights of the South Coast, from coastal rainforests to the iconic Sea Cliff Bridge.

Mount Keira
Mount Keira is one of Wollongong’s most distinctive landmarks, rising 464m above the seaside city. Mount Keira features several lookouts, all of which offer breathtaking panoramic views of Wollongong and the surrounding area, which need to be seen to appreciate fully.

Wollongong City Heritage Trail
Sometimes it’s not enough to simply enjoy the scenery of an area. Sometimes it’s also fascinating to learn about its past. For those who want to fully get to know the history of this majestic region, there is the Wollongong City Heritage Trail. A two-hour tour, the trail includes 23 stops at signifi cant sites of post- European settlement, such as Old Wollongong Court House, built in 1858, and the 1859-built St Andrew’s Cathedral.

Nan Tien Temple
The largest Buddhist shrine in the southern hemisphere, the Nan Tien Temple (Southern Heaven Temple in Chinese) offers visitors a cultural experience that can’t be matched.

From guided tours of the temple’s gardens, statues and shrines to t’ai chi and mediation classes, a trip to Nan Tien promises a unique insight into both Buddhist and Chinese cultures.
