As one of Australia’s most historic wine regions, the Hunter Valley is home to many of the country’s most prominent and longstanding family-owned wineries, as well as some truly unique styles of wine. If you’re visiting the region, be sure to check out some of these beautiful wineries and vineyards, ranging from the iconic such as Tyrrell’s and Brokenwood, the charming such as Tintilla and Scarborough, and the relatively new but just as great Andrew Thomas and De Iuliis wineries. Semillon and Shiraz are the Hunter’s bread and butter, but there’s more to this old region than meets the eye. Here are some of our suggestions for the perfect wine on your big day.
When looking to celebrate, you can’t go past a good champagne or Australian sparkling wine made the traditional way.
Recommended drop: Tyrrell’s 2011 Pinot Noir Chardonnay Brut
Famous UK wine critic Jancis Robinson describes Hunter Valley Semillon as “Australia’s gift to the wine world”. Semillon starts its life as a crisp, citrussy wine perfect for refreshment on a warm day, before completely changing after fi ve-plus years and becoming rounder, toasty and honeyed.
Recommended drop: De Iuliis 2013
Sunshine Vineyard Semillon Verdelho is one of the less common white varieties the region produces. The wine’s tropical fruit salad-like characters make a great crowd-pleasing party favourite, perfect in warmer weather.
Recommended drop: Tulloch 2013 Verdelho
Rosé is undergoing a resurgence in Australia. With an avalanche of dry and delicate varieties, it has become the ultimate summer drink.
Recommended drop: Mistletoe 2013 Barrel Fermented Rosé
Hunter Valley Shiraz is a very different beast to the full-bodied and opulent varieties of Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. Mediumbodied and distinctly earthy, Hunter Shiraz is both great in warmer weather and with food. And with some of Australia’s oldest vines sourcing the fruit, the wines have plenty of intensity and complexity to please real red lovers too.
Recommended drop: Thomas 2011 Sweetwater Shiraz
There is a growing movement in Australia to craft wines from emerging, alternative grape varieties, with Italian varieties in particular suiting our warm climate and growing food and wine scene. Sangiovese is the most prominent of these, its medium-bodied, refreshing and food-friendly nature making it the perfect warm-weather-wedding red.
