How Much Should You Spend On A Wedding Gift?

How much you spend on a wedding gift all depends on how close you are to the couple.

According to a study from the Spending and Saving Tracker last year, the average amount that a guest was projected to spend on a wedding gift was $106. And although this might seem a bit excessive, particularly if you'll be attending a few weddings during the year, than fear not. There are certain rules that can bring the price down.

It is considered quite inconsiderate to spend less than $50 on a gift, whether you're close to the couple or not. But if you're not BFF's the starting guidelines are between $50-$75. If they are a close friend or a family member, the average price jumps to $75-$150. So that's where your average $106 is coming from.

If you've decided to give the couple cash, which is becoming more and more common in the wedding stakes, see if the pair have registered their bank accounts through sites like Tendr. It allows guests to give money virtually, along with a sentimental note they can personally write on a beautiful digital card. That way it feels more special.

Even if you decide not to attend the wedding, in some instances it can be considered rude not to purchase the couple a gift. Even if you only spend $30, it's the thought that's appreciated.
