No matter what your dress looks like or how well decorated the venue is, your wedding photos are what will bring this memorable experience back to life in the years to come. Choosing some photography locations that fit in with the theme of your wedding is always a great idea, and your photos will forever be extra special if you take them in locations that hold signifi cant meanings to you and your partner. Here are some suggestions to help you to get thinking of your own top spots.

Montsalvat

Located in Eltham, this unique property has a certain sense of rustic ambience. The medieval styling of many of Montsalvat’s bluestone buildings gives a truly historic edge to photographs. The extensive gardens are green for most of the year, providing endless opportunities for photos and poses, not to mention the picturesque pond on-site. There are facilities to have your wedding at Montsalvat, or you can simply arrange to stop by for some photos. Bookings are essential, phone 9439 7712. Rates are $500 for the fi rst hour and $440 for each additional hour.

Billilla

Billilla is a historic mansion in Brighton and is one of Melbourne’s few remaining homesteads. The intricate designs of the balconies and windows, as well as the gardens and the staircases make this mansion look almost like a palace. This location provides spectacular backdrops for photo shoots and the gardens change depending on the season, while always remaining beautiful. Billilla is both majestic and romantic — one of the best locations Melbourne has to offer for either your fairytale wedding or just simply some photos. Bookings are essential, phone 9599 4444.

Hotel Windsor

At more than a century old, Hotel Windsor offers a romantic window into Melbourne’s past. From the stylish period corridors to the grand staircase in the foyer, this grand location offers the ultimate photo shoot experience. An off-camera flash will bring an extra sense of European romance to your photos, especially in the late afternoon. The Windsor allows wedding photography in the lobby free of charge, no bookings required.

Labassa

Situated in Caulfield, Labassa is one of Australia’s most picturesque mansions, with original architecture still largely intact. Built in French Renaissance style, the building has an intricately ornate interior, consisting of mahogany timbers and a rare illusionist ceiling. The exterior, however, features inset Italian marble panels, arcaded verandahs and Corinthian columns. The list of spaces here to take exquisite photos on your wedding day is endless. Bookings are essential, phone 9527 6295. Photography rates apply.

Kerferd Road Pier

The pier at Kerferd Road is another truly historical location in Melbourne. One of its most significant features is the ability to drive right up to the water’s edge. The end of the pier offers sweeping views of the sea and sky, providing a dramatic backdrop to your wedding photos. Kerferd Road has plenty of shade, which is perfect for hot summer days as well as providing adequate escape from rain.

Carlton Gardens, the Royal Exhibition Building and the Melbourne Museum

With the avenue of trees and elaborate landscaping, it is hard to go wrong at the Carlton Gardens. With two ornamental lakes and two beautiful fountains, the gardens provide a picturesque setting for your wedding photos. The Royal Exhibition Building, with its romantic arches and intricate detailing, provides a stunning background for photos or, if you want something strikingly more modern, the sharp lines of the Melbourne Museum are right next door.

Other secret locations:

• Melbourne’s city laneways
• Cliffs at Half Moon Bay, Black Rock
• Army Barracks on St Kilda Road
• National Rhododendron Gardens, Olinda
• University of Melbourne

Keep an eye open for out-of-the-way places that others may not have thought of to make your wedding photos truly unique. Be it a gorgeous cafe or florist, a rustic wall, an old shed in the country, or a special place you and your partner frequent.
