A day in the life of a bride-to-be is wild and hectic, and adding a weight-loss journey into the mix of appointments and fittings can be a daunting task. Fear not; feeling fi t and fabulous as you walk down the aisle is right within your reach. Author and personal trainer Tiffi ny Hall, known to her team on The Biggest Loser as the ‘white ninja’, gave us the skinny on her favourite slim-down strategies.

Ironically, the word stressed spelled backwards is desserts. Often the more stressed we are, the more we crave the bad stuff. The secret to curbing this habit is none other than planning and preparation. Just like you would factor in a trip to the dentist or a meeting with your florist, factoring in exercise and nutrition is vital. “As you plan your week, make appointments for exercise and nutrition,” says Tiffi ny. “I like to say that from 6am to 7am, I am going for a run and nothing else can take up that time. “It is the same with meals; make sure that they are regular. You have got to prepare your meals, otherwise you need to be prepared to fail. Make a bigger dinner for tonight and take the rest of it with you for lunch tomorrow.”

Smart snacking is an important part of healthy living, and the stress of planning a wedding can affect your diet regime. Eating healthy food is even more important when you are a busy bride-to-be, as you need the fuel to keep you going. Eating fatty snacks or even forgetting to eat can result in fatigue and irritability.
“You also can’t go wrong with the basics. Nuts, tuna and vegetable sticks will keep your energy high and your mind alert. I also carry handfuls of spinach while on the road for extra energy.”

While it is no surprise to anyone that the key to losing weight is a balanced diet rich with lean protein, leafy vegetables and low-GI carbohydrates, a recent phenomenon happens to be the blowout day where you ditch the healthy diet and indulge in all of your favourites. But Tiffiny is adamant that these blowout days will only hold you back.

“I believe in giving yourself treats all the time because if you have one day set aside for indulging in all of the things that you deprive yourself of, it creates a binge culture,” Tiffi ny explains. “Those binges become more frequent and then you get into the vicious cycle of binging and then starving. That is a really disordered way of eating and a dysfunctional relationship with food. If you feel like a little piece of chocolate, then have it then and there in moderation, but don’t save up all of your treats for one day, because it is really diffi cult to get back on track.”

If you are looking to lose weight and tone up, the biggest misconception is that weight loss and fat burning are simply about intense exercise and smaller food portions. In order for your body to uphold a fat burning state, it needs to maintain a healthy metabolism. One of the best ways of achieving this is getting the right amount of sleep. “If you don’t get enough sleep, the stress hormone, cortisol, slows your metabolism and shuts down fat burning for the day,” says Tiffiny. “You need to be getting seven to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep. Shut down your iPhone, turn off the computer and anything in your bedroom that is potentially distracting. That way, you wake up and your body has the energy to burn fat or to run at its maximum.”

Enlisting the help of your future hubby or even your bridal party will make the whole experience more enjoyable and will motivate you to stay on track. If your fi ancé is up to the challenge, sign up for group classes together.
