How did you begin in the bridal market? What was the motivation?
I’ve alwaysloved couture and high-end fashion for as long as I can remember. Since the age of five, I loved looking through my grandmother’s fashion magazines. I was quite obsessed with drawing clothes for my cut-out paper dolls and loved craft projects. My grandmother was also a big influence. I helped cut out patterns and loved watching her sew. During high school, I did a short course in fashion on the weekends and it just felt right. It truly confirmed that I could have a career in fashion.
I continued onto a Fashion Diploma at St George TAFE. I remember my teacher telling me that I had an eye for detail and that I really am meant to do bridal when she noticed my love for silks, laces and intricate designs. [I] then soon worked fulltime in the industry, while obtaining a Diploma in Theatre Costume at Ultimo TAFE to expand my technical skills. It felt like a natural progression to pursue a career as a couture designer for my own label.
What trends have you noticed recently?
I think the beauty with couture is that it’s not so focused on trends but more about authentic luxury that transcends time. I have been noticing, though, that more brides are looking for gowns with a real point of difference and are appreciating details more than a minimalist look.
What’s special about Rosalynn Win Haute Couture?
I absolutely love to spoil my clients. I understand that this is a very special time in their life filled with elation but, at the same time, also very hectic juggling jobs, wedding planning and having enough time left for everyone including themselves. Therefore, I love to help make their couture journey as easy and enjoyable as possible. We love to put as many special touches as we can for them.
Tell me about these special touches.
I always give our clients a framed sketch of their wedding gown to keep as a special memento when they come to collect the gown. It is always an emotional time as most are very touched by this gesture and their appreciation is so inspiring to me. We also love to pop a little blue bow on the train loop and embroider the bride and groom’s names with a wedding date into the gown to personalise each piece. We have the amazing Tessarella House jewellery designers Anna and Contessa Nicolaou in the same boutique and our brides are offered jewellery consultations by the designers themselves, working closely to create custom jewellery to match their gown perfectly. They also cater to the whole bridal party with evening jewels.
If brides request it, I also dress them on their wedding day if time permits. The excitement on the day is electric and it’s such a privilege to be able to witness that. Going the extra mile is what it’s all about.
What do brides need to have before they come to see you?
An open mind! Couture is best when they are open to the idea of creating a gown that is completely unique to them. A bit of online research and magazines are a good start, so they can get an idea of what they like and don’t like.
