Surrounded by the dramatic landscape and bushland of the mountains or rolling green hills of the southern highlands, your wedding will feel remote without being too far away.

A good destination wedding will give the couple and their wedding guests a sense of being completely removed from the hectic realities of life, and there’s no better way to create that feeling than by immersing everyone in a different natural environment — but one that’s conveniently close to home.

The green paddocks and farmland feel of the Southern Highlands set the scene for a wedding infused with rustic, country charm. Dotted with historic country houses, charming churches, quaint bed and breakfasts, and lined with age-old trees and beautiful gardens, the setting allows couples to enjoy a personal and relaxed day.

Local photographer Jon Wellings, from Bird and Bee Photography, highly recommends the region for weddings and says the area’s photogenic scenery is one of the main reasons. The “beautiful properties, country lanes, and unfi lled roads” are a constant source of inspiration for Jon. While the historic towns of Mittagong, Bowral, Berrima, Moss Vale, Robertson, Bundanoon, Burrawang, and Exeter each have their individual highlights, Jon finds some of his best work happens in the simplest of locations.

“Some of my best shots have been on the side of the road with just a store in the background,” says Jon. “Photo locations don’t have to be huge and spectacular. Simple backdrops with the right lighting and the interaction between a couple make for amazing shots.”

If a more dramatic landscape is your preference, the Blue Mountains might be just right. A string of towns along the Great Western Highway and Bells Line of Road offer myriad beautiful venues, with extraordinary views of the Grose, Jamison, or Megalong Valleys. Other venues might simply capture that fresh outdoors feel of the mountains with stunning gardens. Breathtaking wedding photos can be captured at Flat Rock (Wentworth Falls), Echo Point, Mount Tomah Botanic Garden, or Everglades Gardens.

Having a wedding in this area goes beyond the big day. Your guests will have endless things to do, from visiting the Jenolan Caves, Three Sisters, and Wentworth Falls to taking a short walk to Pulpit Rock or visiting the quaint towns of Leura, Blackheath, and Mount Victoria. The picturesque surrounds are complemented by a plethora of heritage-listed venues, local vendors and quaint chapels that cater for both intimate and grand wedding celebrations.
