Sun, sea and sparkle made this couple’s day magical

FRENCH-INSPIRED ROMANCE Rhiannon and Mark were introduced seven years ago by mutual friends. Mark proposed to Rhiannon while they were on a mini break in Melbourne. “While walking between dinner and a bar, a private gondola pulled up alongside us on the Yarra River,” recalls Rhiannon. “After a private Gondola ride and bottle of French champagne, Mark balanced on one knee to ask for my hand in marriage.”

BY THE SEA As they both wanted a Sydney summer wedding, the couple wed at Our Lady Star of the Sea. This small church, which is perched on a hill, features beautiful stained-glass windows and is in the harbourside suburb of Watsons Bay. Rhiannon wore a beautiful Rachel Gilbert gown, inspired by the elegance of the roaring '20s. The gown’s embellishments add a touch of old-world glamour to the modern silhouette, while the antique silver beading and full-bodied, silk chiffon skirt evoke a picture of pure femininity.

SOMETHING SPECIAL Finding a venue nearby for the reception was essential to Rhiannon and Mark, and the Royal Motor Yacht Club in Point Piper fitted the bill.

The food and service was provided by Zest, with canapés and cocktails served on the balcony looking over the water. “It was a dream, the best day of our lives so far. The day was relaxed, fun, one big party — just as we had hoped for. We felt so special to have our families come together and celebrate with the love and support of our best friends for a whole day,” says Rhiannon. “To add to the nostalgia and tradition, our ‘something old’ was a display of our parents’ and grandparents’ wedding photos at the reception. ‘Something blue’ and ‘borrowed’ was my grandmother’s blue antique brooch, which I wore in my corsage.”

BRIDE’S ADVICE “Have a clear idea of what you want out of the day — action or relaxation, calm or busy, bright or moody. Planning and organisation are key — have a run sheet! Even better, personalise it for the groom, bridesmaids and parents. It means, as the bride, you can relax knowing others are (also) in control of the day. Have fun, remember to take time to eat ... and, more importantly, enjoy a special moment with your new husband — the day will be over before you know it.”
